Sporting Goods

The sporting goods industry involves companies that manufacture, wholesale, and retail sporting and athletic products such as: outdoor equipment for use in hunting, camping, or fishing; a variety of balls used in sports like baseball, basketball, and football; other products that may include bats, mitts, marine equipment, and billiards equipment, among other goods. Sporting goods manufacturers purchase raw materials from textile companies and use them to create an array of sports and athletic products.
These products are then sold to retail stores and wholesalers. Sporting goods used for team sports, gym and exercise products, and gym equipment make up the majority of sales in this industry that contribute to revenue.

Technological innovations and the use of new materials have significantly affected the sporting goods industry. For example, tennis racquets and golf clubs used today bear little resemblance to their counterparts of even as recently as a decade ago, given lighter, stronger and faster materials, changing the nature of the equipment and the sports themselves.

Competition in the sporting goods industry is steep for retailers and manufacturers. In both sectors, demand is driven by popular trends and the income of consumers. Profitability is dependent on many different factors in the industry: retailers rely on the advantages they have to stock their stores with a broad spectrum of products, continuing to carry a specialized product lines, providing repair services for goods if needed, focusing on a specific locale, and employing staff members with experience in the sporting goods industry. Manufacturers put emphasis on smooth processes and strategic advertising to appeal to consumers. They benefit from recognition of brand names, and strive to provide a wide product spectrum. Manufacturers also focus on producing unique goods that will attract different consumer markets.
